Lower Engine Cowling, Part 2

Yet another "good idea" from Viking is the inclusion of some cooling air on the coil packs, or coil on plug or COPs.  That would necessitate an additional duct.  After noodling the idea to what I hope was a sufficient extent, I began my quest for a COP cooling duct....in the lower cowl, on the pilot's side.

First order of business was to create a mold.  My back-of-the-envelope analysis concluded that I could get away with just a straight, relatively short section of duct work.  Duct tape and some reliable old carnuba-based car wax on the PVC pipe got me this far.

The picture below shows the extracted fiberglass duct...but it was about a 30-minute fight as the glass was tightly cured to the mold.

Another orthogonal view of the duct.

The lower cowl was violated with a nominal 2 inch ellipse, then the duct was temporarily jigged into position (with duct tape of course).  At that point, the cowling had been secured to the firewall, with the duct pointing to the assumed best location for cooling the COPs.

A view to the inside of the cowl/COP cooling duct.

As with the oil cooler duct, flox mixed with resin and then glassed into place, makes for a clean and secure installation.
